The European airports nominated were Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Moscow (Domodedovo), Hamburg, London (Heathrow), Helsinki (Vantaa), Rome (Leonardo da Vinci), Lisbon, Madrid, Munich and Zurich.

Ready for the future: Current projects at Zurich Airport

  • The ongoing projects at Zurich Airport comprise two objectives:
    • Implementation of Schengen-Treaty at ZRH, including the revamping of Pier B/li>
    • Centralisation of security checkpoints

The main aim of the projects is to enable Flughafen Zürich AG to implement the Schengen Agreement by providing the required passenger infrastructure. The revamping of Pier B and the centralisation of security checks will enhance quality and user-friendliness and reinforce Zurich's status as a quality airport.

Since 29 March 2009, passport controls are no longer required for passengers travelling from Zurich Airport to a destination within the Schengen area. However, since this date passengers transferring between Schengen and non-Schengen areas at Zurich Airport have to undergo a passport check.

In order to compensate for the loss in handling capacity resulting from the implementation of the Schengen Agreement, Pier B is to undergo major alterations. The new pier will have two handling levels for Schengen and non-Schengen passengers, will offer connected stands for up to nine aircraft and eight bus gates serving aircraft on open stands. The new Pier B is set to be handed over to operation at the end of 2011.

The centralisation of security controls will result in all passengers and staff being screened before they enter the "Airside Center" and hence allow passengers more time to enjoy the wide range of shops and restaurants. The construction of the security control building is also scheduled for completion at the end of 2011.
