Barcelona
  • There is substantial property investment by Norwegians in the area. Norwegian and Spanish nationals travel to and from the North Sea to work. There is two-way tourism potential, particularly from Norway to Spain.
Brussels
  • Stavanger is a major NATO city, as host to its Joint Warfare Centre. There is significant traffic to the NATO Headquarters located in Brussels. It is a solid point to point route. It is also a transfer route, linked to medium and long haul flights to other destinations. The Stavanger region has its own representation office in Brussels.
  • MIDT figures indicate a solid business travel potential for this route.

Is this the most beautiful country in the world? Stavanger offers superb inbound and outbound possibilities, a very prosperous willing-to-travel catchment, and a great range of viable air services waiting to be snapped up.

Helsinki
  • Stavanger’s substantial shipping industry is dependent on good connections to the Far East. This is also an important hub for domestic Finnish flights.
  • Over the last three years, the MIDT data indicate an increase in business passengers between Stavanger and Helsinki.
Manchester
  • No direct flights go to southwestern Norway as of September 2009. It is a good connecting destination for transatlantic flights. There is substantial tourism from Norway, related foremost to football.
Milan
  • No existing flights go to Italy from southwestern Norway as of October 2009. NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger generates travel between Stavanger and Naples. MIDT data shows a solid business potential between several Italian cities and Stavanger. There is also a solid outgoing and incoming tourism potential between Stavanger and Italy.
Munich
  • MIDT data shows potential, primarily for tourism. Munich is also an important football destination and a good transfer point.
Rome
  • MIDT data shows a substantial increase in passengers between Stavanger and Rome over the last four years. Rome is a popular destination for Norwegian holiday home owners in Italy, particularly in Tuscany.
Stockholm
  • MIDT data shows a solid business and leisure potential between the two airports.
St. Petersburg
  • This is a preferred destination for the Norwegian oil and gas industry. It is Stavanger’s friendship city in Russia. It is an important airport for domestic transfer.
Tallinn
  • There is explosive growth in Norwegian tourism due to competitive prices and continuous development of Estonia over the last few years.
Vilnius
  • There is explosive growth in Norwegian tourism due to competitive prices and continuous development of Lithuania over the last few years. European Capital of Culture in 2009, as Stavanger was in 2008.
Bodø
  • Norwegian armed forces have relocated their OPS HQ from Stavanger to Bodø and during the next 2-5 yrs there will be extensive travel demand from Stavanger residents working in Bodø which also serves as a “feeder” airport to the Lofoten islands. Bodø also has great feeder potential to other routes from Stavanger.
Tromsø
  • Future development of the Norwegian Continental Shelf will be based out of Tromsø which is also a connecting airport to Svalbard and other destinations in Northern Norway. MIDT shows substantial business travel potential.
Kristiansund
  • Important Norwegian offshore base with increasing heliport activity. MIDT data shows that 80% of passenger traffic is business related.
Ålesund
  • Important airport for the oil, gas and shipping industry. Centre for Norwegian furniture industry (Stokke, Ekornes, Hjellegjerdet). Great feeder potential for SVG.

Sales-Driven Regional Marketing

  • As part of a national programme launched by Avinor in 2006, the purpose of which is to increase airborne tourism to Norway, the Stavanger Region has invested more than NOK 45 million ($7.5m) in marketing into destinations to which Stavanger is directly connected by air. The programme was originally a three-year programme, but will be continued as a regionally financed programme for another three years.
  • The major success of the programme has been its sales focus – airlines flying to the campaign destination have played a vital role by offering attractive prices on seats for a limited period of time, securing both increased knowledge about its operations and ticket sales from the very onset.

An Antonov-124 at Stavanger: Scope for freight development is immense, partly in support of the 420,000 consumers in the catchment, but principally in supply of industry – oil and gas in particular have a significant demand for heavy lift for spares and components such as those used in the construction of this gas injection module at Kværner Rosenberg’s Stavanger yard.

Principal attraction: Fjords and people. The airport is being developed in support of its local assets – a new 188 room hotel to be operated by Rica Hotels opens adjacent to the terminal in August 2010. Further improvements in 2010 include extension of International Departures (February); Domestic (July) and a new multi-story car park the following year.

Geography

  • Daily train services links the Stavanger region to the southern and eastern parts of Norway, including Oslo. Frequent ferries to Denmark and a wide selection of fjord locations. Daily express ferries to Haugesund, Stord and Bergen. There is a good road system that feeds the catchment area into the airport.
