Sønderborg Airport (SGD/EKSB)

New routes and frequency possibilities and why these routes would work

Route
Amsterdam
  • An unserved route with a significant market potential and with great support from the border-region business clusters. Amsterdam is becoming more and more important as passengers in the region currently have to leave their homes 3-4 hours before flying in order to reach the nearest airport with flights. The route would get enormous support from the region’s trade and industry.

People, places and technology: Up to four million people live and work in the Danish-German border region of Sønderjylland-Schleswig. Sønderborg itself is home to an important new campus of the University of Southern Denmark.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport
  • Sonderborg-Berlin is an unserved route with significant market potential. Sonderborg-airport has a largely unexploited potential that can be activated from 2012, when accessibility will be considerably improved and the catchment area enlarged by up to 60 per cent. In spring 2012, a four-lane M51 highway will link the town and airport to the famous E45. The population of the 90-minute catchment area will rise from 997,940 people to 1,610,020 and the catchment areas will expand to become the second largest in Denmark outside Copenhagen. A direct route from Sonderborg to Berlin Brandenburg Airport, operated by the right airline with adequate equipment and frequencies the present route development has every chance of becoming a success story. We estimate that more than 60 % of the passengers will transfer in Berlin. However - Berlin is an important business centre and a major tourist destination and with the increase in catchment area a direct route to Berlin would be attractive for both business and leisure.

A huge industrial catchment: This map of the global production and sales operations of the industrial Danfoss Group, headquartered close to Sonderborg airport, could easily serve as a guide to some of the connection opportunities like the one the airport seeks to support a Hamburg service. The €3.6bn Danfoss Group employs 31,000 worldwide across 70 factories, most recently opening a plant in Romania. Several other global Danish household brands, such as Ecco Shoes, also considers the region to be ‘the most comfortable place on Earth.’

Other major reasons to serve this airport

  • The Danish-German border region, Sønderjylland-Schleswig, is the natural hub between Scandinavia and Northern Europe. The border region is an ideal location for industry and distribution headquarters.
  • Big International companies like Danfoss, Siemens, Hydro, Linak and Ecco Shoes have their headquarters on the Danish side of the border. For example Danfoss has more than employees 31,000 worldwide and its headquarters, near Sønderborg Airport, controls more than 70 factories in more than 25 countries.
  • The population of the border region consists of 4.0 million people.

The opportunities from Sønderborg centre on its population’s clear propensity to travel – especially because of its industrial base – although the town itself also has picture-postcard charm.
