Under-served freight opportunities and other economic impacts

Under-served freight opportunities and other economic impacts Orlando Sanford manages the operation of a fully integrated cargo operation with seamless handling for flown and trucked cargo. The airport also houses a 31,000 square foot warehouse which includes 6,000 square foot of cold storage and blast freeze facilities. The facility is located in US Foreign Trade Zone 250.

Geography

Orlando Sanford International Airport is located in Central Florida and is situated 16 miles from Orlando City Centre. The airport is also a 45-minute drive from Daytona and New Smyrna beaches. Access is available via taxi, bus, (OMIT or) rental car or uber with all options available on-site without the need for shuttle or sky train. Another option for transportation is via the Sun Rail system, situated just minutes from the historic town of Sanford. Sun Rail provides the opportunity to experience the uniqueness of the surrounding towns from Sanford to downtown Orlando.

  • Terminals: Two terminals (A&B). A-opened in 1996, refurbished in 2005. B-opened in 2000, refurbished in 2012.

Domestic services utilise all 12 and international services utilise nine of the 12.  Orlando Sanford also has an executive lounge available to all passengers for a small fee that includes a movie theatre, bar, snacks, video game room, quite room and a toddler play area.

Important infrastructure developments and/or other news

  • Due to a 20% increase in departures and passenger traffic, Orlando Sanford will begin a fully funded 3+ year terminal transformation which will begin in Q4 2016. The transformation will result in the migrating of a two- to one-terminal facility. As a result of the project, the new terminal functionality will mean: one large centralised check-in area; one large centralised security search area; four additional gates with jetways, resulting in 16 in total; and three additional baggage carousels.

  • Freight: Imports – 864 tons; Exports - 452 tons; Total – 1,316 tons (2015).
  • Largest carrier: Allegiant Air is Orlando Sanford’s largest carrier with it serving over 68 domestic destinations.
  • Other: As of 2015, Orlando Sanford has benefited from five years of record passenger traffic.
