Malmö Airport (MMX/ESMS)

New routes and frequency possibilities and why these routes would work

Amsterdam
  • Passengers in southern Sweden have the opportunity of travelling from major airports in the region, but Malmö Airport is the faster and more convenient alternative that is preferable for both business and leisure travelling. It is not realistic to think that Malmö Airport could have the European and intercontinental network of a major airport, but the connection to a large hub is therefore of great importance.
  • Amsterdam is a good hub for a wide range of European destinations, but also a perfect alternative for long haul. KLM operated between MMX and AMS for 10 consecutive years and reached more than 100,000 annual passengers. This route is still one of the routes with the biggest passenger demand. Potential market of about 75,000 point-to-point passengers one way. Additional potential transfer market of about 38 000 passengers.
Barcelona
  • Swedes spend a large part of their disposable income on travelling in comparison with many other nationalities. Very often Swedes travel to warmer places not too far from home where they can enjoy the sun and warmth as well as shopping, wining and dining. Barcelona is a perfect place for all of this and the catchment area of Malmö Airport needs alternatives to the many routes served by tour operators and charter airlines on a weekly basis.
  • The expected number of annual passengers one way from Malmö Airport is 60,000. This is a route operated previously from MMX with a load factor of 75%.

Citizens of the Malmö catchment area: Zlatan Ibrahimovic draws large crowds of Swedish football fans to watch him play in his new home town Milan, while Wallander fever has hit Europeans as the Ystad police detective drama series is broadcasted across Europe.

Bucharest
  • Bucharest has an ethnic VFR market in Malmö, but the high number of journeys made from the region shows that this also is destination attracting leisure traffic. The potential one way traffic flows are of 27,000 pax.
Düsseldorf
  • Germany is a country with strong bonds to Sweden, creating large incoming as well as outgoing passenger flows to the south of the country. The entire North Rhine-Westphalia region is important to Malmö and Skåne region due to the many business partnerships and trade relations, as well as tourist attractions on either side. Statistics show that the number of potential one way point-to-point passengers is 52,000. Another 12,000 may be added to this potential when including possible transfer flows.
  • Germany is also a highly prioritised route for the tourism/aviation partnership Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well supported for joint marketing activities.
Florence
  • Italy is very popular for Swedes for leisure travel and the country market is also growing in terms of incoming tourism to the south of Scandinavia. Florence is a route previously operated from Malmö Airport (2008) and a route still demanded by passengers. The number of potential passengers is 14,000 one way.
Frankfurt
  • Frankfurt is not only located in Germany, which is a country with strong business ties and tourism links with southern Sweden, but also a great hub airport. Research shows that passengers in the south of Sweden rather travel out of Malmö Airport, a smaller and more convenient airport in Sweden that saves the passengers up to €80 for the journey across the Öresund Bridge. In order to reach as many destinations as possible from Malmö, a direct connection to a major hub in Europe is of great importance. A direct route to Frankfurt attracts 37,800 potential one way point-to-point passengers, with a realistic additional 53,000 potential one way passengers travelling through FRA.
  • Germany is also a highly prioritised market for the tourism/aviation partnership Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well-supported for joint marketing activities.
Helsinki
  • Helsinki is a highly attractive hub with fast connections. There are about 66,000 potential point-to-point passengers one way and another 18,000 that would feed into the Finnair network, both east and westwards.
Ljubljana
  • Malmö is a multicultural city with more than 174 nationalities represented. The largest groups, excluding the Danish population, are the ones from the former Yugoslavia. Statistically, about 50,000 people with background in this region live in the Skåne region (statistics cover people born in Y or ex-Y or born in Sweden with both parents from Y or ex-Y; third generation and people with one parent from the region are not included).
  • Many still travel to Ljubljana by car, but population statistics and existing traffic flows suggest a market of 24,000 potential one way pax from Malmö Airport annually.
Milan
  • Milan is a city with strong connections to Sweden both from a business and leisure perspective. Overnight stays in Malmö made by Italian people have increased by 34% in April 2011 over the previous year and 14% in the first half of the year. Italy is a popular leisure destination for Swedes for its culinary experiences and Milan specifically for its football, golfing, skiing, hiking and sightseeing opportunities. A direct route to Milan from Malmö Airport would attract 43,000 potential one way pax.
  • Milan is a highly attractive market for the tourism business in Skåne and Malmö. Therefore the partnership Swedish Skåne is interested in investing marketing support in joint activities if a direct route was introduced from Malmö Airport.
Munich
  • Munich and the region of Bavaria is often visited for business as well as leisure. The number of potential point-to-point one way pax is 39,000. If including transfer flows through MUC, potential one way pax reaches a total of 60,000.
  • Germany is a highly prioritised route for the tourism/aviation partnership Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well supported for joint marketing activities.
Nice
  • Predominantly leisure demand from the wealthy catchment area that is spending a large proportion of its disposable income on travel.
  • The number of potential passengers from Malmö Airport to Nice is 30,000 one way.
Oslo
  • Norway is one of the largest visiting nationalities in south Sweden – last year about 45,000 overnight stays were spent by Norwegians in Skåne. The majority of visitors travel for business, with a high number of day trips. There are several business partnerships and numerous trade relations between companies in the south of Sweden and businesses in the Oslo area. Norway as a whole is Skåne's second-largest export and seventh largest import market.
  • A direct route between MMX and OSL is expected to attract up to 130,000 one way pax.
Paris
  • Paris is primarily an outgoing market from Malmö and Skåne but nevertheless quite large. The number of potential passengers on a p2p and one way basis is 97,000. As well as many other larger hubs in Europe, there is a significant transfer flow to be expected from MMX; 27,000 pax one way.
Prague
  • Prague is a pure leisure destination from Skåne. The Czech Republic is attractively priced for Swedes and the city is now among the most popular city break destinations. Prague has recently been served from Malmö Airport, but since Prague is a summer destination only and the airline wanted a destination to operate year-round, the destination was dropped.
  • The potential number of passengers is 25,000 one way.
Pristina
  • Pristina is the largest city and the capital of Kosovo in former Yugoslavia. A large part of the population in Skåne comes from this region. Approx. 50,000 people have a first or second generation connection to ex-Yugoslavia.
  • Because of this the number of trips per year increases quickly, the expected number of passengers between Malmö Airport and Pristina is 13,500 one way.
Rome
  • In addition to tourism flows in both directions, Italy is among the 10 largest import and export countries for Skåne and many of the largest companies in our region have offices to large extent in the Rome area.
  • A direct route to Rome would attract at least 48,000 pax on a one way basis.
Santorini
  • Malmö Airport offers a wide range of charter destinations that major tour operators and charter airlines serve year round. Unfortunately, the length of stay provides little flexibility. For that reason, Malmö Airport needs choices of sunny destinations to which passengers can travel on other conditions.
  • Santorini is a popular Greek island among Swedish tourists and would be a perfect complement to the existing charter options at MMX. The number of potential pax on a one way basis is 7,000.
Skopje
  • Malmö's multicultural population is represented by 174 nationalities and about 50,000 people with a first or second generation connection to the former Yugoslavia. Skopje currently lacks any air connections from this region and many VFR pax therefore travel by car. A calculated and potential number of passengers is 16,000 one way p2p.
  • No direct traffic from Scandinavia!
Thessaloniki
  • Thessaloniki fulfills Swedes' criteria as an ideal leisure destination and the Malmö Airport catchment area needs alternatives to the many routes served by tour operators and charter airlines on a weekly basis.
  • The number of potential passengers from Malmö Airport to Thessaloniki 7,000 PAX, one way.

A well-coordinated marketing support network is also in place as well as discounts and package deals for Danes crossing to Malmö Airport by the nearby Oresund Bridge. • Malmö Airport applies a 5-year incentive program of 100% discount on take-off and passenger charges.

In addition to a large number of international companies headquartered in Malmö Airport's catchment area, the airport functions as a low-cost, uncongested cargo airport for all of southern Scandinavia.

Under-served freight opportunities and other economic impact factors

  • Malmö Airport provides a cheaper, faster and more flexible service in southern Scandinavia due to no extra charges from Eurocontrol, no slot coordination, and no congestion.
  • The airport is located “at the end” of Sweden, meaning that large cargo volumes pass Malmö Airport on their way to other airports and continental Europe. Use Malmö Airport and cut bridge tolls, terminal charges, and airport costs!
