Malmö Airport (MMX/ESMS)

New routes and frequency possibilities and why these routes would work

Amsterdam
  • Passengers in Skåne has the opportunity of travelling out of major airports in the region but Malmö Airport is an easier and faster alternative which they rather use for their business as well as leisure travelling. It is not realistic to think that Malmö Airport could have the European and intercontinental network of a major airport and therefore a connection to a larger hub is of great importance. Amsterdam is a good hub for a wide range of European destinations but also a perfect alternative for long haul travelling. KLM operated between MMX and AMS for 10 years in a row and reached more than a 100 000 annual passengers. This route is still one of the most wanted routes among our passengers. On a p2p basis there is a potential annual market of about 75 000 passengers one way. Add to this the potential transfer market of about 38 000 passengers.
Barcelona
  • Swedes spend a large part of their disposable income on travelling in comparison with many other nationalities. Very often Swedes travel to warmer places not too far from home where they can enjoy the sun and warmth as well as shopping, wining and dining. Barcelona is a perfect place for all of this and the catchment area of Malmö Airport needs alternatives to the many routes served by tour operators and charter airlines on a weekly basis.
  • The expected number of annual passengers one way from Malmö Airport is 60,000. This is a route operated previously from MMX with a load factor of 75%.

Citizens of the Malmö catchment area: Zlatan Ibrahimovic draws large crowds of Swedish football fans to watch him play in his new home town Milan, while Wallander fever has hit Europeans as the Ystad police detective drama series is broadcasted across Europe.

Bucharest
  • Bucharest also has an ethnical market in Malmö but by calculating the average number of trips per foreign inhabitant it clearly shows that this is a destination also for leisure traffic. The potential one way traffic flows are of 16 000 PAX.
Düsseldorf
  • Germany is a country with strong bonds to Sweden creating large incoming as well as outgoing passenger flows to south Sweden (272 000 German bednights in Skåne in 2011). The entire Nordrhein Westfalen region is important to Malmö and Skåne due to the many business partnerships and numerous trade relations as well as tourist attractions on both sides. With that as a base, statistics tells us that the number of potential passengers is 18 000 one way, p2p. Another 12 000 may be added to this potential when including possible transfer flows.
  • Germany is also a highly prioritized route for the tourism partnership called Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well supported for joint marketing activities.
Florence
  • Italy is a very popular place for Swedes to travel to and it is also growing in terms of incoming tourism to the south of Scandinavia (20 200 Italian bed nights in Skåne in 2011). Florence is a route previously operated from Malmö Airport (-08), a route operated by Cimber Sterling from CPH (-11) and a route still asked for among our passengers. The number of potential passengers is 14 000, one way.
Frankfurt
  • Frankfurt is not only located in Germany, which is a country with strong business ties and tourism links with southern Sweden, but also a great hub airport. Research shows that passengers in the south of Sweden rather travel out of Malmö Airport, a smaller and more convenient airport in Sweden that saves the passengers up to €80 for the journey across the Öresund Bridge. In order to reach as many destinations as possible from Malmö, a direct connection to a major hub in Europe is of great importance. A direct route to Frankfurt attracts 37,800 potential one way point-to-point passengers, with a realistic additional 53,000 potential one way passengers travelling through FRA.
  • Germany is also a highly prioritised market for the tourism/aviation partnership Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well-supported for joint marketing activities.
Helsinki
  • As previously said and also better explained in "other major reasons to serve this airport", the south Swedish passengers rather travel out of Malmö Airport than the larger and more time consuming airports in the region. It is not realistic to believe that Malmö Airport could have the European and intercontinental network of a major airport and therefore a connection to a larger hub is of great importance. Looking at Helsinki as a highly attractive and fast hub there are about 25 000 potential p2p passengers one way and another 10 000 potential passengers to feed into the Finnair network east and westwards.
Istanbul
  • Istanbul is not only an attractive destination in itself it is also a major hub to Europe, of course, but foremost to the rest of the world. Turkey is among the top three countries for leisure travel among the Swedish population and about 5 000 Turkish inhabitants are living in Skåne. The potential one way PAX p2p is 10 000 and add to that another 15 000 PAX transferring through Istanbul.
Ljubljana
  • Malmö is a multicultural city with more than 174 countries represented. The largest nationalities except for the Danish population are the ones coming from ex-Yugoslavia or the countries formed thereafter. Statistically, about 58 000 inhabitants with this background lives in Skåne (statistics cover persons born in Y or ex-Y or born in Sweden by two parents from Y or exY, third generation and persons with parents of different nationalities are not included). Many visiting Ljubljana still travel by car but from the population statistics and existing traffic flows it is expected to be at least 12 000 potential PAX from Malmö Airport annually, one way.
Milan
  • Milan is a city with strong connections to Sweden both from a business and leisure perspective. Italian bed nights in Malmö have increased by almost 30% in May 2012 compared to the same month last year and Swedes are very fond of Italy for soccer, golfing, skiing, hiking and sightseeing. A direct route to Milan from Malmö Airport would attract 21 000 potential PAX, one way.
  • Milan is a highly attractive market for the tourism business in Skåne and Malmö. Therefore the partnership of Swedish Skåne is interested in investing marketing support in joint activities if a direct route was introduced from Malmö Airport.
Munich
  • Munich and the region of Bavaria is often visited for business as well as leisure. The number of potential point-to-point one way pax is 39,000. If including transfer flows through MUC, potential one way pax reaches a total of 60,000.
  • Germany is a highly prioritised route for the tourism/aviation partnership Swedish Skåne. A route to Germany would be well supported for joint marketing activities.
Nice
  • Swedes spend in comparison to many other nationalities a large part of their disposable income and many of their vacation days on travelling. Very often Swedes travel to warmer places not too far from home where they can enjoy the sun and warmth as well as shopping, wining and dining. Nice is a perfect place for all of this and the number of potential passengers from Malmö Airport is calculated to 21 000, one way.
Oslo
  • Norway is one of the largest visiting nationalities in south Sweden – in 2011 about 70 000 Norwegian bed nights were spent in Skåne. Since Norway is geographically located very near Skåne and since the majority of the visitors are here on business there is also a lot of day trips no captured in the bed night statistics. There are several business partnerships and numerous trade relations between companies in the south of Sweden and businesses in the Oslo area. Norway as a whole is Skåne's second largest export and seventh largest import market. A direct route between MMX and OSL is expected to attract up to 70 000 PAX, one way.
Paris
  • Passengers in Skåne has the opportunity of travelling out of major airports in the region but Malmö Airport is an easier and faster alternative which they rather use for their business as well as leisure travelling. Paris is primarily an outgoing market from Malmö and Skåne but never the less, quite large. The number of potential passengers on a p2p and one way basis is 44 000. As well as many other larger hubs in Europe there is quite a significant transfer flow to be expected from MMX, 12 000 PAX one way.
Prague
  • Prague is a pure leisure destination from Skåne where visitors go for the modern shopping and the old architecture, the local beers and the international inspired food as well as the warmer weather. Prague has been operated from Malmö Airport with and 80-90% load factor but was dropped due to the fact that Prague is not a year round route. The potential number of passengers is 18 000, one way.
Pristina
  • Pristina is the largest city and the capital of Kosovo in former Yugoslavia. A large part of the population in Skåne comes from this region. Approx. 50,000 people have a first or second generation connection to ex-Yugoslavia.
  • Because of this the number of trips per year increases quickly, the expected number of passengers between Malmö Airport and Pristina is 13,500 one way.
Rome
  • As said in the section about Milan, Swedes love Italy for its food, its historical remains, culture, soccer and climate. In addition to this, the number of Italian visitors to Malmö and Skåne is increasing. Italy is among the 10 largest import and export countries for Skåne and many of the largest companies in our region have offices not only in Milan but also in the Rome area.
  • A direct route to Rome would attract at least 22 000 PAX on a one way basis.
Santorini
  • Malmö Airport offers a wide range of charter destinations that major tour operators and charter airlines serve year round. Unfortunately, the length of stay provides little flexibility. For that reason, Malmö Airport needs choices of sunny destinations to which passengers can travel on other conditions.
  • Santorini is a popular Greek island among Swedish tourists and would be a perfect complement to the existing charter options at MMX. The number of potential pax on a one way basis is 7,000.
Sarajevo
  • Malmö is a multicultural city where more than 150 languages are spoken among the inhabitants. The largest nationalities represented come from ex-Yugoslavia or the countries formed thereafter. Statistically, about 58 000 inhabitants with this background lives in Skåne (statistics cover persons born in Y or ex-Y or born in Sweden by two parents from Y or exY, third generation and persons with parents of different nationalities are not included).
  • Many people travelling to Sarajevo travel by road. By only looking at the flown passengers MMX has a potential of 11 000 one way PAX annually.
Skopje
  • Malmö's multicultural population is represented by 174 nationalities and about 50,000 people with a first or second generation connection to the former Yugoslavia. Skopje currently lacks any air connections from this region and many VFR pax therefore travel by car. A calculated and potential number of passengers is 16,000 one way p2p.
  • No direct traffic from Scandinavia!
Sofia
  • Sofia is a destination which after the bankruptcy of Cimber Sterling is unserved from south Scandinavia. Again, it is a destination which closely goes hand in hand with the multicultural population in Malmö and Skåne. The one way potential from MMX reaches 18 000 PAX annually.
Thessaloniki
  • Thessaloniki fulfills Swedes' criteria as an ideal leisure destination and the Malmö Airport catchment area needs alternatives to the many routes served by tour operators and charter airlines on a weekly basis.
  • The number of potential passengers from Malmö Airport to Thessaloniki 7,000 PAX, one way.

Other major reasons to serve this airport

  • A research study conducted by Markör Marknad och Kommuniation shows that passengers living in the catchment area of Malmö Airport rather travel out of MMX as it is a smaller, faster and more flexible airport.

Malmö Airport offers a highly competitive incentive scheme with generous discounts for both new routes and passenger growth. A well-coordinated marketing support network is also in place as well as discounts and package deals for Danes crossing to Malmö Airport by the nearby Oresund Bridge. The attractive marketing support is one of many reasons why Ryanair has launched routes to Malmö Airport.

Marketing and other support

  • Malmö Airport applies a 5-year incentive programme of 100% discount on take-off and passenger charges.
  • Airlines introducing new routes or increasing traffic on existing routes qualify for marketing support where the size depends on destination, weekly frequency and if it is year-round or seasonal traffic.
  • Intermediate stop discount is granted to airlines flying from any airport via Malmö Airport on its way to its final destination. 50% of the take-off fees in both directions are rebated.
  • Also, Malmö Airport has a separate marketing support programme helping to share risk with airlines during a start-up period.

Under-served freight opportunities and other economic impact factors

  • Malmö Airport provides a cheaper, faster and more flexible service in southern Scandinavia due to no extra charges from Eurocontrol, no slot coordination, and no congestion.
  • The airport is located “at the end” of Sweden, meaning that large cargo volumes pass Malmö Airport on their way to other airports and continental Europe. Use Malmö Airport and cut bridge tolls, terminal charges, and airport costs!

Important infrastructure developments and/or other news

ESS and Max IV to Lund

European Spalliation Source, is a research facility which will not only complement at least two handfuls of research centers in the world but it will also be the biggest investment within research and development in Sweden in 25 years!

ESS can be seen as a huge microscope where neutrons are shot through pieces of materials in order to learn how and what it is made up of. This instrument will give totally new opportunities within chemistry, nano technology, environment, food research, bio technology, medicine etc.

The placement of Max-IV, the upgrade of Max-Lab and a sister facility to ESS, will positively influence each other.

The ESS lab alone is estimated to generate 700 more job opportunities per year from 2010 and onwards, meaning that there will be about 3500 people employed in direct connection to the research facility already in 2015. Add to this, thousands of visitors per year. This has already created a demand for new office space and following this a need for about 500 new houses and/or apartments.

It is guaranteed to be a vast growth of population within the region due to ESS. This will create a need for more health care services and the public sector have to expand in order to be able to take care of the larger amount of inhabitants. Sports and other recreational activities will have to expand their programs. The number of schools and daycare centers has to increase both with Swedish and international units for families moving to Lund for ESS. The university and technical college will also have to increase their educational programs as well as their facilities.

A side from the “musts” above the city of Lund will also build innovation centers like IDEON and MEDEON as well as science centers and science adventure parks. Finally, except for all the jobs created in direct connection to ESS there will be numerous job opportunities in public transport, stores and shops, restaurants and cafés etc.
