Other Reasons to Serve Cyprus

  • 330 days of sunshine together with the island’s wealth of culture, history and hospitality compliment its tourist product which is continually diversifying in nature, to include such activities as agro tourism, sports/sports training, medical and spa/wellness.
  • Significant infrastructure development is continuing to take place within Cyprus following the completion of the final portion of the motorway system in Limassol to produce a seamless road journey linking all the key cities and towns of the island. New marinas, golf complexes, improved cruise ship port facilities, new hotels are all planned over the next few years.

Aphrodite's island where the assets of natural beauty and culture are totaally intertwined: Petra tou Romiou, where the goddess of love emerged from the sea, and the idyllic Kykkos Monastery which possesses one of the three surviving icons thought to have been painted by St Luke.

Hermes will open a new passenger terminal at Pafos in November 2008, and at Larnaka, in November 2009 where the development programme will take the airport to an annual capacity of 7.5 million passengers.

Under-served freight opportunities and other economic impact factors

  • Cyprus is strategically centred in the Eastern Mediterranean to act as a hub for the East Mediterranean and the near Middle East region.
  • It also offers an ideal location for freight operators to use the airports as a staging point for convenient fuel and/or crew changes.

Geography

  • Cyprus lies at the crossroads of three continents, where East meets West and a new experience awaits for you under the sun every day.
  • Larnaka Airport (LCA) is located 5km to the west of the historic town of Larnaka, whilst still only a short transit time to the capital city of Nicosia and the key tourist centres of Ayia Napa, Limassol and Protaras all accessed by a modern motorway network.
  • Pafos Airport (PFO) is located 16km to the east of Pafos Town which contains a number of UNESCO Listed historical sites, and acts as the centre of the tourist industry in the West of Cyprus. In addition the airport serves as the gateway to other popular locations of Coral Bay, Latchi, Polis, Troodos Mountain Range and Limassol.
  • Both airports are now connected to the major towns of Cyprus with a new shuttle bus service running at regular intervals.

Important Infrastructure Developments

  • Hermes Airports Ltd assumed management and control of Larnaka International Airport and Pafos International Airport on 12 May 2006, under a 25 year BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) concession agreement with the Republic of Cyprus.
  • Hermes is a company registered in Cyprus – which is an international consortium of 9 shareholders, representing a mix of Cypriot and international partners. The shareholders in Hermes Airport Ltd are:
    • French construction group Bouygues Batiment International (22%).
    • French infrastructure group Egis Projects (20%).
    • Cyprus Trading Corporation (11.34%).
    • Hellenic Mining (11.33%).

    • Iacovou Brothers (5.665%).
    • Charilaos Apostolides (5.665%).
    • French airport operator Aéroport Nice Côte d’Azur Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie (2%).
  • The Concession Agreement includes a €622m plan to develop both airports through construction of a new passenger terminal building at each site and other associated infrastructure, including aprons and runway extensions. This work commenced immediately, under a rapid Design and Build Contract. The new passenger terminal at Pafos will open in November 2008, and at Larnaka, a year later, in November 2009. The construction contract is the biggest ever undertaken in the Republic, with the Build-Operate-Transfer project being the first privatization of its kind in Cyprus. The new airports will offer world class, state of the art facilities, with an emphasis on excellent customer service.
  • At Larnaka, Phase 1 of the development programme will take the airport to an annual capacity of 7.5 million passengers. Phase 2, programmed to commence in 2013, (dependent on traffic growth) will include an extension of the new terminal to increase capacity to 9 million passengers per annum, and a runway extension from 3,000m to 3,500m. At Pafos, annual capacity will increase to 2.7 million passengers. The programme also includes an extension of the main runway to 3,100m, together with a new south parallel taxiway, in Phase 2.
  • At both Airports, major upgrades to the existing passenger terminals have been made, with the complete redevelopment of retail and catering outlets, expansion and modernization of arrivals facilities and meet-and-greet areas. Road access and car parking facilities have also been upgraded and modernized at both sites.
