A deliberate strategy to embrace high speed rail has significantly expanded the catchment. The airport's own railway station beneath the terminals is served by high-speed ICE trains and a further express service to Cologne Central - the genuine hub of the European high-speed network linking Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Hanover, Hamburg and Berlin.

Cologne is the largest city in North-Rhine-Westphalia. With 1 million inhabitants, it is Germany's 4th largest city. Situated on the banks of the river Rhine, the city has developed into the most important centre of trade and commerce in the West of Germany.
